FUMIGATION MAKES A COME-BACK
Now that Biosecurity plays a more important role than ever in production, many producers have returned to the old method of Formaldehyde Fumigation using a Thermal Fogging machine. Most bacteria are susceptible to formaldehyde gas, even in the presence of organic matter. The gas is highly soluble in water, and it does not diffuse well into porous materials and should really be regarded as a surface disinfectant. However through condensation the gas is absorbed by porpous surfaces as a film of polymerised formaldehyde.
The environment during the operation is critical to its effect. After washing, humidity should be increased to 70-80%, then the house should be heated to 21°C (70°F) before fumigation, then sealed and left to cool for 24 hours, thus promoting uniform condensation.

Formaldehyde solution and gas both present a hazard to human and animal life so operators should be fully aware of the risks and trained accordingly. Animal Aids have carried out this service for producers for the last 30 years. If you are interested or would like to discuss your Terminal Hygiene Programme please call us.
